A Promise Across Oceans
The true history of the Center for the Support of Educational Initiatives in Africa (CSEIA) is not the history of a single person but a promise.
Years ago, after sharing dinner with a family in Senegal, a father introduced his young son, who has Down Syndrome, to a visiting special educator. Knowing her background, the father looked at her and asked a simple but purposeful question: "I heard that you are a teacher of children with special needs. Can you help him and the other children like him?" The answer was, "YES".
That father was the president of his region's "Parents Association for Children with Intellectual Disabilities". His son's school had abruptly closed, and the children were displaced to a location equipped only for students with physical disabilities, not those with cognitive challenges. This left the other students with a small dedicated staff who were mostly untrained, with limited resources, and inadequate educational support. Though only meant to be temporary, that displacement lasted for years.
While specialized schools are more recently emerging, that young boy has since "aged out" of the traditional school system, and his father has also passed. The promise made to both remains alive and is the "birthplace" for CSEIA.
The memory of that child waiting for support is the driving force of our unwavering dedication to CSEIA and its mission: to provide educational programming and teacher training to professionals who serve children and youth with special needs in Africa.
